What makes a good AI mock interview?

Most interview prep tools generate a list of questions and leave you to grade your own answers. Our AI Mock Interview is multi-turn: the AI plays the hiring manager, asks role-specific questions one at a time, evaluates each answer against what good would look like at your seniority, and asks the next question accordingly. You get the rhythm of a real interview without scheduling one.

Each turn, the AI surfaces what worked, what was missing, and what to tighten — then asks the next question calibrated to the difficulty you picked. At the end you get an overall score (0-100), three specific strengths, three specific improvements, and a recommended next step.

How to run a useful mock interview

  1. 1

    Set up the role honestly

Pick the exact role + seniority you're targeting. "Senior PM at B2B SaaS" beats "PM". Paste the JD if you have one — questions will tailor.

  2. 2

Pick the interview type that matches the round

Behavioral for managerial / "tell me about" rounds. Technical for system design / concepts. Mixed for first-rounds where you don't know what to expect.

  3. 3

Treat it like a real interview

Don't write in shorthand. Type the way you'd actually speak. The AI grades against what good would look like at the seniority — vague answers get called out.

  4. 4

    Read every piece of feedback

The rubric bullets are the highest-signal part. If the AI says "your STAR was missing the result", that's the same flag a real interviewer flagged silently.

  5. 5

    Iterate fast

Re-run the same question with a tighter answer and compare. Every interview round is a chance to recalibrate before the real thing.

Tips for a stronger interview performance

  • Use STAR for every behavioral answer — Situation (15s), Task (15s), Action (90s), Result (30s). Most candidates over-invest in Situation and rush Result.
  • Lead Result with a NUMBER. "Revenue rose" is forgettable; "Revenue rose 32% in Q3" sticks.
  • For technical questions, narrate your thinking out loud. Interviewers grade reasoning more than the final answer.
  • Ask one clarifying question before you start any non-trivial answer — it shows scoping, the highest-signal skill.
  • Don't apologise for taking 3-5 seconds to think. Silence is fine. Filler ("um, you know, like") is not.
  • Match your specifics to the seniority — junior answers focus on contribution, senior answers focus on judgement.

AI Mock Interview FAQs

How realistic is the feedback?

The AI is calibrated against what hiring managers actually look for at each seniority. It's not perfect — no AI is — but it catches the obvious flags (no metrics, no scope, missing the question, fluff) every time. Real interviewers are stricter on charisma + clarity which you can't practice in text.

Is this voice or text-based?

Text-only. Voice-based AI interview practice exists but text gives you space to think and a transcript to review later. We may add voice in the future — for now this is the best fit for self-paced practice.

How many questions does an interview cover?

You pick — 4, 6, 8, or 10. Most users find 6-8 the sweet spot. Real first-round interviews are usually 5-7 questions for behavioral, fewer for deep technical.

How is this different from the free Interview Questions tool?

The Interview Questions generator gives you 10 questions to read and prep against. Mock Interview is multi-turn practice — the AI asks one, evaluates your answer, then asks the next based on how you did. Two different layers of the same problem.

Will the AI know my company / role specifics?

It tailors based on the role title and the JD you paste. It won't know your specific team or the actual hiring panel. Use the JD field to inject any company context you have.

Can I save interviews?

Not on the free anonymous tier — once you close the tab, the transcript is gone. Sign up free to save full transcripts, review your history, and track improvement across interviews.

What if the AI asks a question I don't know how to answer?

Type that. Say "I haven't worked on this specifically — here's how I'd think about it…" then walk through your reasoning. That's genuinely how senior interviewers want to see you handle unknowns, and the AI will give you feedback on the framing.
